River side Middle School received a threatening phone call,” according to Superintendent Chris Mansfield. “ School administrators moved the school into a soft lockdown situation while the veracity of the threat was being investi gated.” Together with law enforce ment, school officials de termined that a controlled dismissal could be safely con ducted. “1 am appreciative of school and district staff for taking ap propriate action. 1 am also ap preciative of Williamston Po lice and Martin County Sheriff Department officers for their actions in the investigation of the threat and in assisting with the safe school dismiss al,” Mansfield added. Chief Deputy Drew Rob inson of the Martin County Sheriffs Office said the threat was “ultimately unfounded;” however, the incident remains under investigation. Maintaining status quo Martin County Commissioners keep chair, vice chair; reappoint leaders SARAH HODGES STALLS Enterprise & Weekly Herald WILLIAMSTON - There will be no leadership changes among Martin County Board of Com missioners after a Dec. 13 vote. The annual election and ap pointment of positions on or attached to the board was held early in the regularly scheduled monthly meeting. The first position up for dis cussion was board chairman. County Manager David Bone called for nominations from board members. Commissioner Elmo “Butch” Lilley made a motion for Com missioner Tommy Bowen to re main chairman. Commissioner Ronnie Smith, who attended a portion of the meeting via phone, offered a second to Lil- ley’s motion. By unanimous vote, Bowen was reelected chairman - Lilley, Dempsey Bond Jr., Smith and Joe Ayers all offering affirmative votes. Bond, who was currently serving as vice-chairman, was nominated to retain the posi tion by Smith. Lilley offered a second to the motion. Bond was unanimously supported to stay in the role. Williamston lawyer Rich ard James was reappointed to serve as county attorney by unanimous vote. Bond made the initial motion and a second was given by Smith. Jessica Godard, county clerk, was reappointed as clerk to the board of commissioners follow ing a motion from Ayers and See LEADERSHIP, 6 WILLIAMSTDN - Mem bers of the Martin Coun ty Sheriffs Office lent assistance in the ap prehension of a wanted man Friday afternoon. An increased law en forcement presence was reported Friday around 12:30 p.m. near the 5000 block of Prison Camp Road. According to Martin County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Drew Rob inson, a bail bondsman had orders for arrest for an individual from Pitt County. The individual, who was not named, was wanted for failure to appear in court. Tracking the individ ual took the bondsman into Martin County. The person of interest was reportedly located at 5115 Prison Camp Rd., which is near the inter section of Bailey Road. Once the individu al was located, they failed to surrender. The bondsman then sought assistance from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. See CAPTURE, 3 Keel joins Bond in seeking commission seat THADD WHITE Enterprise & Weekly Heralf/ WILLIAMSTDN - Two people have filed for Martin County Commissioner as the deadline nears. Incumbent Dempsey Bond Jr. has filed for a third term on the Martin County Board of Commissioners and Hilton Keel Jr. is seeking a seat on the board. Both filed as Demo crats. Incumbent Commissioner Tommy Bowen has not filed for re-election to date, and Commissioner Elmo “Butch” Lilley is unaffiliated, and therefore files by written peti tion. The only other local candi date to file is incumbent Reg ister of Deeds Kimberly J. Grif fin, a Democrat. While local filing has been underwhelming, national and state offices have an abun dance of candidates. Democrats have submitted 15 names for the Presidential Primary. They include former Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (Col orado), Cory Booker (New Jersey), Bernie Sanders (Ver mont), Amy Klobuchar (Min nesota) and Elizabeth War ren (Massachusetts) as well as U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii).
